The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins
“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” – Matthew 25: 1-13
First things first, you need to be in proper position. Waiting on something from the Lord yet not being in the proper place is like ordering something and giving them a shipping address to your condo in Florida but waiting for the package to arrive in your home in North Dakota. Even the thought of that sounds silly and it will be some nerve of you to even get mad at the shipping company if you do not receive it at your home in North Dakota. They did their job and shipped it to the correct address so it will be your problem if you are in the wrong place.
Like the 5 wise virgins in the parable above, they were where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be, with what they were supposed to have. Don’t miss God because you didn’t show up and were not prepared.
Don’t expect the bus to show up on 12th Avenue where you are if the bus stop is on 5th Avenue. Get in proper position and then you will see God move in your life.
If you have ever been at a bus stop you probably noticed how everyone is typically looking in the same direction. Everyone has his or her gaze in the direction in which the bus will arrive. This is a sign of anticipation and that is how we should be when we are waiting on the promises of God. Watching and anticipating is in itself an outward expression of your faith.
All of the virgins in the above parable anticipated the bridegroom’s arrival so they slept nearby the place in which they should anticipate his arrival. Even though the bridegroom was delayed in coming the women did not leave because they were fully aware that at any moment he could come and they wanted to be present and ready.
Don’t go on break if the things you are waiting on are delayed. You never know when it will come but one thing that you can rest assured in is that it is on its way so be where you need to be and keep your focus.
Waiting with anticipation is a sign that you are expecting something. The reason that you are able to sit with expectation is because you were told that you would receive it if you waited. It’s just like waiting on the bus; you are able to sit at the bus stop with expectation that the bus will come simply because the little piece of paper posted on the bus stop tells you when the bus will arrive. Now, it may come a few minutes early or it may come a few minutes past the expected time but regardless, you know it is coming.
The ten virgins knew they would meet the bridegroom. They were informed where to go and when it was time to see him they were instructed to go out and meet him as he was coming. Five of them only were able to go in because they came prepared. If you are expecting something from God then you too should come prepared.
If you are waiting on Him to give you a job then go out and buy your suits. If you are waiting on Him to get you in the program then go ahead and have all of your paper work ready. If you are waiting on Him to give you a baby then go ahead and prepare the baby room. Don’t say you are waiting for Him to do it before you prepare for it…just like the other five virgins, you just may get left behind! Be ready when He shows up and wait with A.W.E.
∆ Phone God: Dear Lord, thank you for helping me to better understand my season of waiting. I thank you for the strength you have given me to hold on just a little while longer. Help me to be where I need to be, when I need to be, with what I need to have. Help me to keep my focus on you as I wait with anticipation for your next move. Thank you in advance for all that you will do. In Jesus name, Amen.
∆ Chew on this:
- “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” – Psalm 27:14
- “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
∆ Ponder on this:
- Have you ever thought that while you are waiting on God…He, too, is waiting on you?
- Have you ever considered that your promises may be delayed simply because you have not been where you were suppose to be to receive it?
∆ Act on this:
- Talk to God as you are waiting and ask Him what your role is as you are waiting. Is there something that you could be doing right now?
